Dragon’s Teeth instalment in the school zones

Dragon’s Teeth instalment in the school zones

We are all concerned about the safety of our kids, especially when cars and busy roads are involved.

Starting with the instalment of the first triangular road markings, Dragon’s Teeth, at Penrith in September 2009, a massive works program associated with the introduction of the Dragon’s Teeth has continued across NSW. The Dragon’s Teeth are being installed at all 3,154 schools all around NSW with the important work expected to be complete at the entry points to all 10,000 school zones across New South Wales by the end of 2010.

The instalment of the Dragon’s Teeth was an innovative $14 million initiative, announced by the NSW Government in May 2009, which was introduced in addition to the comprehensive school zone road safety program.

Dragon’s Teeth are already used internationally and are a clever and cost-effective way of keeping students and their parents safe on the road. Combined with the existing signs, flashing lights and painted “40” pavement markings on the road, the Dragon Teeth will further increase the visibility of school zones for motorists and provide a constant reinforcement to keep to the 40 km/h speed limit around schools.

The majority of school zones operate between 8am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm till 4pm.

Children are often unpredictable and do not always act safely around traffic, and the visibility of the Dragon’s Teeth road markers will help to remind drivers to slow down during school zone times, as we all know that the slower speed in school zones lessens the risk of crashes.

One more good initiative that will help lessen the risks on the roads and will increase kids safety.
